1ST YEAR ENTRANCE EXAMINATION RULES, 2017 INTAKE

I. CONDITIONS FOR ELIGIBILITY

The competitive entrance examination for 1st year is open to candidates who meet the following two conditions :

  • holding at the time of admission a French baccalaureate or a recognized French or foreign equivalent ;
  • being a maximum of 25 years old on 31 December of the year of registration.

If a candidate does not meet one of these conditions, an exemption may be granted by the Director of the school for exceptional reasons duly justified. Requests for such an exception must be made before 3 February, 2017.

Candidates are permitted to register for only one entrance exam per calendar year and cannot compete in more than three entrance examinations in total.

Candidates must comply with the conditions for registration and respect the 2017 registration calendar.

The registration fee for the 2017 examination is 52 euros or 26 euros for candidates with CNOUS scholarships. This fee must be paid online via a secure payment system (see ‘Registration Procedures’ below).

Students in the final year of secondary school are permitted to register for the entrance examination. Admission to ENSAD is, however, conditional on the successful completion of a baccalaureate or equivalent foreign secondary school leaving qualification.

Access arrangements can be made for candidates with disabilities or a chronic illness upon written request during online administrative pre-registration (see Registration Procedures’ below).

FOREIGN CANDIDATES

Candidates who have been awarded foreign diplomas must provide an attestation of equivalence/comparability from the awarding institutions. If such diplomas are in a language other than French, certified translations or translations by a sworn translator of these diplomas must also be provided. A knowledge of French sufficient to allow the candidate to interact with the jury during the examination is required. The project outline and cover letter (see ‘Preliminary Selection’ below) and the written analysis of and reflection on an image (see ‘Admission Test’ below) can be written in English.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Candidates who wish to obtain a scholarship based on social criteria for the academic year 2016-17 must apply to the CNOUS (www.cnous.fr).

II. REGISTRATION PROCEDURES

As soon as registration is open, the web portal concours.ensad.fr/ will be available to candidates, via the website of the school. Candidates must register online via this portal and consult their personal online space for news of the status of their registration, invitations to attend the different stages of the examination, and results.

1. Online administrative pre-registration
This is a mandatory procedure which must be carried out between 13 January and 6 February, 2017.

The validation of the registration form will generate a registration number which must be quoted in all subsequent correspondence.

2. Supporting documents to be uploaded
a. A scan of a current passport or identity card ;
b. Authorization of parents or guardians if the candidate is a minor ;
c. Proof of 2016-2017 scholarship from the CNOUS ;
d. Residence permit for non-European candidates ;
e. Request for access arrangements in the case of candidates with disabilities or a chronic illness * ;
f. Declaration of intention to use English in written parts of examination,
g. Request for age waiver.
*The deadline for registration is the deadline for these requests.

3. Registration Fees
Payment of the 52-euro registration fee must be made online via a secure procedure. For students with CNOUS scholarships the fee is 26 euros.

Neither money orders nor cash payments are acceptable. If payment is made via bank transfer, the totality of the transfer fees must be paid by the candidate, otherwise the registration will not be validated.

After validation of the registration form and the online payment, the administrative pre-registration will generate and send an email to the candidate and the candidate’s online space will be updated.

The registration fee is non-refundable, even if the candidate withdraws.

Registration will become final only after validation by the school of the completed registration form and electronic versions of all requested supporting documents.
Once a candidate’s registration has been validated he/she will receive an email from the school and his/her online space will be updated.

4. Obligations of the candidate
Candidates must be present at each stage of the examination at least 30 minutes before the time indicated on the invitation, and must bring both the invitation and a valid form of identity containing a recent photograph. Requests to change the date or time indicated on the invitation will be not be entertained.

If a candidate has not received an invitation in his/her online space 8 days before the relevant part of the examination, it is up to the candidate to contact the Pôle Concours of Ensad (see contact details above) for information.

The use of mobile phones is strictly forbidden once the candidate has entered the examination space. Cheating or any attempt to cheat during the examination will result in exclusion.

Only candidates who have been accepted during the preliminary selection will take part in the admission stage of the examination.

III. THE STAGES OF THE EXAMINATION
PRELIMINARY SELECTION

The completion and submission of this stage of the examination will involve the following :

1. Creation realised at home
The subject of this test will be announced online on 17 February 2017 at 14:00 via the portal concours.ensad.fr/ and on the school’s website. The subject will also be posted at the school.

The candidate can approach the subject with the techniques of his/her choice, in 3D or 2D (the latter will be shown in photographs only). Once completed, the candidate must submit his/her original work on one side only of between 5 and 8 boards (photos, prints, drawings, collage etc.), no larger than A3 (29.7 x 42cm).

Submitting fewer than 5 or more than 8 boards will result in elimination

Candidates must write their surname, name and registration number on the back of each board and number their boards EC1, EC2, EC3, etc. also on the back.
No element in the form of digital data will be accepted.
 

The candidate will be evaluated on the quality and pertinence of his/her dossier, according to the following criteria :
– reflection and conception,
– imagination and originality,
– choice of means of expression,
– presentation.

The submitted dossier must also include a project outline explaining the choice and treatment of the subject (half page typed maximum) and cover letter (half page typed maximum). Foreign candidates may write these documents in English.

The completed dossier for this stage of the examination must be placed in an envelope with the candidate’s registration number and “Épreuve de création réalisée à domicile” clearly marked on the outside. The candidate's registration number must be clearly visible on every document sent or delivered by hand.

2. Portfolio of personal work
The portfolio - no larger than A3 format - must be presented on one side only of between 8 and 12 boards, in the form of reproductions only.

Submitting fewer than 8 or more than 12 boards will result in elimination

Candidates must write their surname, name and registration number and a caption explaining the elements represented on the back of each board and number their boards TP1, TP2, TP3, etc. also on the back.
The candidate will be evaluated on the quality and pertinence of his/her portfolio, according to the following criteria :

- aesthetic qualities,
- proficiency with tools used,
- relevance of selected items,
- uniqueness.

The portfolio of personal work must be placed in a second envelope with the candidate’s registration number and “Dossier de travaux personnels” clearly marked on the outside. The candidate's registration number must be clearly visible on every document sent or delivered by hand.

The portfolio will not be returned to the candidate.

 

The submission for the preliminary selection stage of the examination is composed of the creation realised at home and the portfolio of personal work. Both components must be easy to consult and placed together in one envelope. This envelope can be :
- posted either by standard or special delivery without signature to the following address :
“ Pôle concours - 31 rue d’Ulm 75240 Paris Cedex 05”with "Concours 1re année" clearly visible on the front of the envelope and the surname, name, registration number and the address of the candidate clearly visible on the back. This envelope must be postmarked no later than the 21 February 2017.
- delivered by hand to the relevant personnel in the ‘Rotonde’ (exhibition space on the ground floor) on 21 February 2017 only between 13:00 and 19:00 hours.
The candidate’s registration number must be clearly visible on every document sent or delivered by hand.

Incomplete, oversized, and late submissions, as well as submissions that result in delivery costs to the school, will be systematically rejected.

The preliminary selection stage of the examination has a coefficient of 2.

ADMISSION TEST

1. Written analysis of and reflection on an image
Candidates choose one image from the two proposed and write a maximum of two pages. Foreign candidates can choose to write this text in English.

The candidate will be evaluated on the quality of his/her descriptive analysis and on his/her capacity to identify the different elements at play in the image as well as the clarity and originality of his/her argument.

2. Creation in situ

The candidate will be evaluated on the quality and pertinence of their work, according to the following criteria :
– reflection and conception,
– imagination and originality,
– choice of means of expression,
– presentation.

The creation in situ test has a coefficient of 3.

3. Interview before a jury
The candidate is interviewed about the work resulting from the creation in situ test. He/she presents and defends the creation realised at home and the portfolio of personal work submitted during the Preliminary Selection stage. During this oral interview, the candidate can enrich his/her dossier with new (and preferably original) personal elements and present them to the jury. All media are acceptable.

THE JURY

The composition of the examination jury is decided each year by the Director of the school. The jury draws up the list of candidates admitted in order of their ranking. For the 2017 intake the number of candidates who will be admitted to 1st year will be between 70 and 90.

All decisions of the jury are final and without appeal.
